Abstract: An automated atmospheric turbulence generation system is disclosed, comprising a thermally insulated turbulence chamber having heating elements and PWM- controlled airflow fans configured to generate controlled thermal gradients and regulated airflow, thereby producing refractive-index fluctuations that emulate atmospheric turbulence over a defined optical path. Sensors monitor chamber conditions and provide environmental parameters to a processor, which estimates a refractive index structure parameter and performs two-stage automated calibration. The first stage establishes relationships between fan PWM commands and corresponding airflow, while the second characterizes combined heating and airflow effects on temperature distribution and turbulence strength. A multidimensional lookup table maps heating and fan commands to the refractive-index structure parameter. PID controllers regulate the heating elements and fans through closed-loop feedback to maintain stable, repeatable conditions. The refractive index structure parameter may be varied spatially across different locations within the thermally insulated atmospheric turbulence chamber and temporally according to an operator-defined profile, enabling non-uniform and time-varying turbulence condition.
