Abstract: An apparatus (100) for template-guided semi-automated submerged arc welding of wind tower doorframes and method (200) thereof is disclosed. The apparatus (100) comprises a guide template (105) detachably secured to the doorframe (110) relative to a weld joint (115), the guide template (105) having a top surface with a guide track (120) defining a predetermined continuous closed-loop path corresponding to the geometry of the weld joint (115). A trolley mechanism (125), mounted on the guide template (105), comprises a carriage and a swivel wheel assembly engaged with the guide track (120), constraining the carriage to travel along the closed-loop path independent of variations in the surface profile of the doorframe (110). A submerged arc welding head assembly (145), mounted on the carriage, deposits a weld along the weld joint (115) as the carriage traverses the closed-loop path, thereby providing consistent penetration and uniform weld bead geometry.
