Abstract: A modular alkaline water electrolysis system (100) for hydrogen generation includes a modular stack (102) including a plurality of planar plates (108) arranged to define a plurality of electrolysis chambers. Inlet ports (106) introduce an aqueous alkaline electrolyte into the modular stack (102), and aligned openings of the planar plates (108) define fluid manifolds enabling distribution of the electrolyte within the electrolysis chambers. Outlet ports (110) enable removal of gases generated during electrolysis. Sealing elements maintain an inter-electrode spacing between cathode plates and anode plates. Electrically conductive interconnects connect the planar plates (108) to a direct current power supply in a non-bipolar configuration. The inter-electrode spacing and distributed electrolyte flow enable disengagement of gas bubbles and facilitate transport of gases toward the outlet ports (110), thereby enabling scalable hydrogen production.
