MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641086327 A) filed by Vallurupalli Nageswara Rao Vignana Jyothi Institute Of Engineering And on July 14, 2026, for An Ai-Based Real-Time Luggage Detection And Retrieval System Using Yolo Object Detection For Automated Airport Baggage Management.

Abstract: Luggage detection systems are crucial to the airport passenger experience, and they're also one of the most stubborn challenges, with the sheer volume of passengers and the almost-uniformity of luggage. Old-fashioned techniques like manual pick-up and limited marking don't work; they cause delays and discontent among passengers. This work describes a YOLO (You Only Look Once) object detection system design, an artificial intelligence-powered luggage retrieval system for contemporary airports, that seeks to retrieve luggage with precision and efficiency from moving conveyor belts. YOLO is well-known for its real-time detection rate, which strikes a balance between speed and accuracy in high-speed environments where the movement of baggage is continuous and high. The system assists in detecting the bags of luggage as they travel on the conveyor belt. YOLO's detection model operates more efficiently in one shot compared to two-stage models of detection. The system can handle varying illumination and detect multiple objects in one frame. Early results indicate that the YOLO model has high accuracy in object detection, and that the model is sufficiently fast to use in real-time at an airport. This research assists in automating the luggage tracking, and makes the process of baggage claims more efficient and enhances the passenger experience overall. The findings pave the way for the eventual deployment of AI-based object- detection systems at airports, and more broadly the use of computer vision in solving logistics issues in high-density areas.
