Abstract: An adaptive traffic signal control system using Explainable Artificial Intelligence is developed to improve urban traffic management by reducing congestion, optimizing signal timing, and enhancing road safety. The system uses surveillance cameras to continuously capture live traffic footage at road intersections and applies computer vision with deep learning algorithms such as YOLO to detect and classify vehicles including cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles, and emergency vehicles. Based on real-time traffic density in each lane, the system dynamically adjusts green signal duration to ensure smooth traffic flow and minimize waiting time. The system also provides priority access for emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire engines, and police vehicles by temporarily overriding the normal signal sequence and granting immediate green signal passage. In addition, intelligent accident detection is incorporated by analyzing abnormal vehicle movement, sudden stoppage, or collision patterns from live video feeds. Upon detection of an accident, instant alerts containing location details may be sent to nearby hospitals, ambulance services, or traffic control centers for rapid response. The traffic management system further includes Explainable Artificial Intelligence features that provide transparent outputs regarding traffic density levels, signal timing decisions, emergency overrides, and accident alerts. This improves trust, monitoring capability, and administrative control over automated operations. The system is cost-effective, sensor-free, easy to deploy, and suitable for urban roads, highways, and smart city environments. Its integrated features of adaptive control, emergency support, accident response, and intelligent monitoring make it an effective solution for modern transportation infrastructure.
