Abstract: An adaptive irrigation system and method are disclosed for predicting crop water demand and controlling irrigation based on soil moisture depletion rate and crop growth stage. The system comprises one or more soil moisture sensors positioned within a crop root zone, a crop growth-stage input module, a processing unit, a water demand prediction module, and an irrigation control unit. Successive soil moisture measurements are acquired over time and used to determine a soil moisture depletion rate. The determined depletion rate is combined with information corresponding to the current growth stage of the crop to predict water demand. Based on the predicted water requirement and the prevailing soil moisture condition, the irrigation control unit selectively activates an irrigation actuator and dynamically determines irrigation duration and/or quantity. Following irrigation, updated soil moisture measurements are used to recalculate the depletion rate and update subsequent water-demand predictions. The system thereby provides adaptive, feedback-based irrigation while reducing unnecessary water application and improving utilization of irrigation water.
