Abstract: A method of using Artificial intelligence (AI) based vision-based solution for monitoring and detecting orientations of packages in real-time on conveyors is provided. The solution includes an image acquisition module designed for continuously acquiring images of the packages placed on a conveyor belt, a processing module designed for performing image analysis through artificial intelligence methods and a communication interface for communicating with industrial automation devices. Through the use of deep learning- based object detection, the processing module performs the process of detecting the packages, creating respective bounding boxes, and determining the spatial location, orientation angle, and alignment of the packages with respect to a defined reference line of the conveyor. If a package is sensed to be out-of-place or not positioned correctly past certain tolerance levels, then an anomaly message is created and sent to the PLC to trigger the reject mechanism. Packages that are positioned correctly are permitted to progress onto the next stage of processing. The vision-based system enhances inspection accuracy, process efficiency, and monitoring capability without relying on hardware-based motion sensing technology.
