Abstract: The present invention relates to an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based intelligent traffic signal optimization and real-time congestion management system for dynamically controlling traffic signals and reducing vehicular congestion at road intersections. The proposed system integrates traffic cameras, Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, vehicle-counting units, GPS-based traffic information, and environmental sensors to continuously acquire real-time traffic conditions. An edge/cloud-based AI processing module analyzes vehicle density, queue length, traffic flow rate, waiting time, lane occupancy, vehicle type, and historical traffic patterns. A machine- learning prediction module estimates near-future congestion levels, while an optimization module dynamically determines signal phase sequence, green-light duration, red-light duration, and phase priority for individual approaches. The system further identifies abnormal congestion, incidents, and rapidly developing traffic queues and automatically modifies signal timing or generates alerts to a traffic management center. Coordinated control among multiple adjacent intersections enables traffic progression and reduces stop-and-go conditions. The proposed system provides adaptive, predictive, and real-time traffic management compared with conventional fixed-time or manually controlled traffic signals, thereby reducing average waiting time, queue length, fuel consumption, and unnecessary vehicle emissions while improving intersection throughput and road-user safety.
