Abstract: The present invention concerns an intelligent system for assessing and monitoring the emotional climate, communication quality, family relationship and emotional status in a family environment. The proposed Family Emotional Climate Scanner (FECS) involves the analysis of a structured questionnaire, optional voice and conversational analysis, behavioural indicators, relationship-network mapping and temporal trend analysis, which will result in a dynamic Family Emotional Climate Index (FECI). The proposed system is a novel psychological assessment system that focuses on the family as a whole emotional system, rather than individual assessment. The system detects patterns of emotional support, trust, empathy, communication, cohesion, conflict, emotional withdrawal, and imbalance in relationships. A novel Family Emotional Relationship Graph is developed to describe interactions between the family members and to detect the positive and negative interaction patterns. Historical assessments are then compared in a temporal analysis module to identify any trends in family emotional status over time. The system can also offer personalized, non-diagnostic suggestions for communication enhancement, conflict resolution and family wellness. Sensitive conversational or behavioural data may be processed locally, without the need for unnecessary transfer to servers abroad thanks to privacy-preserving processing. The invention can be used in family counselling, parenting programs, educational counselling, preventive wellness programs and community support systems.
