Abstract: An aerial soil characterization system, comprises an unmanned multirotor aerial vehicle (UAV) 101 having a plurality of landing legs 102, each landing leg 102 comprising a hollow structural member housing including a soil-penetrating probe 103 for axial extension and retraction relative to the landing leg 102, and at least one soil-parameter sensor 104 disposed on a distal portion of the probe 103, a foot pad 105 positioned at a lower end of the landing leg 102 and comprising at least one load cell 106 configured to detect ground contact, a controller configured to command landing of the UAV 101 at a target waypoint, verify ground-contact stability using the load cell 106 prior to probe deployment and actuate the probe 103 to penetrate soil only upon satisfaction of a stability condition, and a data processing module to georeference soil-parameter measurements obtained from the probe 103.
