MUMBAI, India, Aug. 17 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202631077589 A) filed by C. V. Raman Global University on June 23, 2026, for Advanced Multi-Modal Characterization Of Gold Jewellery And Bullion.
Inventors include Aniket Mohanta; Sibangi Sahu; Sudhansu Ranjan Tripathy; Ariyan Mohanty; Rahul Anand; Suchismita Sahoo; and Dr Debarpita Ghosal.
The application for the patent was published on August 14, 2026, under issue no. 33/2026.
Abstract: The present invention discloses an Advanced Multi-Modal Characterisation System for gold jewellery and bullion that integrates six complementary non-destructive sensing modalities — dual-energy X-ray Computed Tomography (DXCT), terahertz sub-surface imaging (0.1–10 THz), Raman spectroscopy (532–785 nm), VIS-NIR spectroscopy (400–2500 nm), Spark Optical Emission Spectroscopy (Spark-OES), and Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) — together with specific gravity measurement, under a unified artificial intelligence data fusion framework. The system overcomes the critical limitations of conventional fire assay and existing single- modality techniques such as XRF and LIBS, which individually suffer from surface sensitivity bias, semidestructive operation, limited depth penetration, and poor accuracy for complex jewellery geometries involving plating, hollow cores, and solder joints. The AI processing unit employs ensemble machine learning models for cross-modal signal correction, feature fusion, and generation of a quantitative purity and authenticity report traceable to ISO-compliant reference standards. A layered material mapping module combines DXCT and terahertz outputs to produce spatially resolved three-dimensional compositional maps of the article. The invention is provided in a portable compact model for retail jewellery counters and a laboratory-scale model for refineries, hallmarking agencies, and regulatory bodies, both supported by an automatic hybrid calibration protocol compliant with NABL and BIS standards, thereby delivering a comprehensive, accurate, and environmentally safe gold assaying solution.
