Abstract: ABSTRACT TITLE: ADDITIVELY MANUFACTURED CUSTOMIZED STELLITE-6 CUTTING INSERT ENHANCED BY LASER SHOCK PEENING An additively manufactured composite-type metal cutting insert is disclosed, in which a Stellite-6-based alloy layer (2) is deposited by a laser-based direct-energy- deposition process on a low-cost H13 tool steel substrate (1) to form a customized cutting insert. The deposited block is ground and polished to standard insert geometries such as SPUN120308 and SNUN120408. Laser shock peening is then selectively applied to the rake (3) and flank surfaces (4,5) in the cutting zone to induce compressive residual stresses, grain refinement and surface hardening. Representative inserts exhibit surface hardness of about 700 HV and low volumetric wear rate in reciprocating wear tests, and, in turning tests on hot-rolled mild steel at 61 m/min, 1 mm depth of cut and 0.08 mm/rev feed, show reduced cutting forces (about 260 N after 11 minutes), reduced flank wear (about 293 µm), and reduced built-up edge area (about 129 µm²) compared with both high-speed steel and as-deposited additive tools. Tool life determined according to ISO 3685 criteria is about 12 minutes for the laser-shock-peened additively manufactured insert, corresponding to an improvement of about 14% over a similar additive insert without laser shock peening and about 172.7% over a high-speed steel tool, while using significantly less Stellite material than conventional cast Stellite tools.
