MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611064619 A) filed by Chandigarh University on May 22, 2026, for Adaptive Thermo-Reflective And Evaporative Cooling System For Bus Roofs.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an adaptive roof cooling system for buses configured to reduce heat accumulation caused by solar radiation. The system comprises a thermo-responsive reflective layer utilizing thermochromic and/or photochromic materials, an evaporative cooling layer with a water-retaining capillary mesh, and a solar-powered micro-pump for water circulation. The present invention further includes a rainwater harvesting arrangement with roof-integrated micro-channels for collecting and storing water for cooling purposes. A thermal insulation layer comprising phase change material (PCM) and/or aerogel minimizes heat transfer into the passenger cabin. Temperature and humidity sensors with optional IoT-based control regulate cooling operation automatically according to environmental conditions. The modular and retrofittable structure enables installation on existing or newly manufactured buses. The disclosed invention improves passenger comfort, reduces air-conditioning energy consumption, enhances vehicle thermal efficiency, and provides an environmentally sustainable cooling solution for transportation systems operating in hot climatic regions.
