Abstract: Abstract Disclosed is an adaptive server rack airflow management system comprising vertically arranged server trays, a cold-air manifold extending along the server trays, tray-wise airflow gates arranged between the cold-air manifold and corresponding server trays, bypass ducts arranged adjacent to the server trays, and thermal- response members mechanically coupled to the airflow gates. Each airflow gate is movable between multiple angular positions to divide incoming cold air between a corresponding server tray and a corresponding bypass duct. Upon heating of a server tray, the corresponding thermal-response member moves the airflow gate to simultaneously enlarge an inlet airflow throat of the server tray and narrow the corresponding bypass duct, thereby mechanically forcing a greater volume of cold air through the heated server tray. The system provides tray-level mechanical airflow redistribution for reducing localized hotspots while limiting unnecessary cooling of lower-load trays.
