MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641125764 A) filed by Saranathan College Of Engineering on October 22, 2026, for Adaptive Modular Thermal-Energy Storage And Thermoelectric Milk Chilling Can For Small-Scale Diary Farmers.

Inventors include Dr. M. Shanmugavalli; M. Dharshini; S. Karunya; S. Nirmal; A. Mohamed Ameer; S. Bala Sree; and S. Nithyasri.

The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: This invention is a portable milk chilling can for small dairy farmers who have no bulk cooler nearby and cannot rely on mains power. The milk is held in a food-grade aluminium chamber of about five litres, with a wall roughly 2 mm thick. The chamber is wrapped in foam insulation and has sealed, removable cartridges of phase change material (PCM) fitted on either side. A Peltier module of the TEC1-12706 type cools the chamber, and once the milk is cold it also re-freezes the PCM, so the can stays cold for a good while after the power goes off. Two DS18B20 sensors, one in the milk and one on the PCM, report to a microcontroller that switches between cooling, recharging and holding. Milk drawn at about 37 degree C is brought down towards 4 to 8 degree C. The whole unit runs on 12 V DC from a battery or a small solar panel, and cartridges can be added or taken out to suit the batch. Prototype tests will record cooling time, temperature stability, energy use, holding time, weight and cost.
