Abstract: A protection system for a modular microalgal photobioreactor (10) treating variable combustion exhaust of an MSME source (14) is disclosed. An upstream gas-quality sensing assembly (20) samples the exhaust at the source, ahead of the gas-conditioning stage (30) and before the gas contacts the culture (12), measuring temperature, a sulphur/acidity-potential variable and particulate loading. A controller (50) predicts from these upstream measurements, and from in-culture feedback (60), whether admitting the sensed gas would push a culture-health indicator past a viability threshold, and, before the gas reaches the culture, selects among a plurality of flow paths of a gas-routing assembly (40) — admit (P1), dilute (P2), scrub-boost (P3) or bypass (P4) — to keep the culture alive with minimum use of conditioning resources. A learning module (53) builds a duty-cycle model of the specific source and pre-positions the flow path ahead of recurring excursions, and a stored or recirculated CO2 supply sustains the culture during bypass. The architecture is anticipatory and source-specific, in contrast to reactive in-culture control, enabling low-cost, compact, retrofit CO2 capture and biomass production for MSMEs.
