Abstract: Due to the rise in nonlinear Electrical Load, today's power systems are experiencing an explosive increase in harmonic distortion. Harmonic distortion is very damaging to the quality of sine waves and can cause numerous negative effects such as power loss, overheating of equipment, electromagnetic interference, and degraded system performance. Some issues with using traditional methods of harmonic suppression with passive filters or digital control of active filters include fixed frequency operation, large size, increased complexity, response time delays, and dependence on software control. In order to overcome these limitations, this paper presents a new Adaptive Harmonic Distortion Suppression Circuit to be used with AC Power Signals. The new circuit will search for distorted AC Power Signals and find the predominating harmonic components, then adaptively eliminate unwanted harmonics while maintaining the fundamental frequency. Using switched-capacitor networks allow adaptive tuning to achieve a real-time adjustable frequency response for operational amplifier-based notch filtering of odd order harmonics (3rd, 5th, etc.).
