Abstract: A wearable system for monitoring and classifying fetal movement comprises an accelerometer and gyroscope sensor module positioned on a maternal abdomen, sensing tri-axial acceleration and angular velocity signals. A preprocessing stage filters the signals by bandpass filtering and adaptive noise cancellation, normalises them by min-max scaling, and applies Independent Component Analysis to separate a fetal-movement-related source component from maternal-movement and environmental- noise components. A feature extraction stage derives mean and variance, time-domain and frequency-domain features from the separated component. A hybrid classifier, comprising a Gated Recurrent Unit stage for learning temporal dependencies coupled to a Multi-Layer Perceptron stage for classification, classifies the movement as normal or abnormal. On detection of abnormal movement, an alert is generated and transmitted via mobile notification, electronic mail, or an Internet of Things dashboard. Sensed data and classification status are displayed locally and on a cloud-based remote monitoring interface accessible to caregivers and healthcare providers.
