Abstract: The present invention relates to a water-rehydratable biodegradable herbal facial mask sheet comprising a cotton substrate incorporated with a botanical formulation containing flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum) mucilage, concentrated pomegranate (Punica granatum) peel extract, and, combined floral extracts of Chrysanthemum, Rose (Rosa), Marigold (Tagetes) and Hibiscus. The flaxseed mucilage is prepared by aqueous extraction of flax seeds using approximately 5 g seeds in 100 mL water at approximately 90-100°C for 15 minutes, followed by separation of the mucilage using muslin cloth. The pomegranate peel extract is prepared by maceration of completely dried pomegranate peels using a 70:30 ethanol:water solvent system for approximately three days, followed by filtration and concentration using a rotary evaporator. The floral extract is prepared by combining approximately 50 g each of Chrysanthemum, Rose, Marigold and Hibiscus petals with approximately 200 mL water and subjecting the combined material to cold perfusion for approximately 12 hours, followed by filtration. The botanical formulation comprising approximately 40 mL flaxseed mucilage, 2 mL concentrated pomegranate peel extract and 5 mL each of the floral extracts is applied onto a cotton sheet having approximate dimensions of 19 cm x 11 cm. The formulation-loaded sheet is dried at approximately 34°C for 3-4 hours and packaged in an airtight container. Before use, the dried mask is rehydrated with approximately 50 mL water for 2-3 minutes, producing a moist and flexible facial mask. The developed invention provides a plant-derived, biodegradable and dry-storage facial-mask system intended for cosmetic applications including skin hydration, conditioning and soothing.
