MUMBAI, India, July 13 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641063017 A) filed by Saveetha Institute Of Medical And Technical Sciences on May 19, 2026, for A Voice Enabled Traffic Signal For The Safe Road Crossing Of The Visually Impaired.

Abstract: ABSTRACT With the growing emphasis on inclusive and safe transportation systems, ensuring road safety for visually impaired individuals has become an important social and technological challenge. Conventional traffic signal systems rely mainly on visual indicators such as red, yellow, and green lights, which are not accessible to people with visual disabilities. As a result, visually impaired pedestrians often depend on others for assistance while crossing roads, which increases the risk of accidents and reduces independent mobility. To address this issue, this project proposes a VoiceEnabled Traffic Signal System for the Safe Road Crossing of the Visually Impaired. The proposed system integrates audio guidance with existing traffic signal infrastructure to provide clear and timely voice instructions for pedestrians. A microcontroller-based control unit synchronizes traffic light operations with a voice announcement module. When a visually impaired pedestrian activates the system using a push button or sensor, the system announces voice messages such as "Please wait" and "You may cross the road now." These announcements are synchronized with the traffic signal timing to ensure safe and sufficient crossing duration. The system continuously guides the user until the crossing process is completed. This voice-enabled approach significantly improves accessibility by allowing visually impaired individuals to cross roads safely and independently without relying on visual cues. The system is designed to be user-friendly, cost-effective, and easy to implement at road intersections, school zones, hospitals, and other public areas. By reducing confusion and human dependency, the proposed solution minimizes accident risks and enhances pedestrian confidence. Overall, the voice-enabled traffic signal system promotes inclusive urban infrastructure, supports smart city development, and improves quality of life for visually impaired individuals. This project demonstrates how assistive technology can play a vital role in creating safer and more accessible transportation environments for all.
