Abstract: The present invention relates to a tri-layer chitosan sandwich composite film incorporating magnetic nickel ferrite nanoparticles encapsulated within an intermediate chitosan layer for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye in water. The composite film is fabricated by a sequential solution-casting process, wherein a pristine chitosan base layer is partially solidified followed by deposition of a chitosan layer containing nickel ferrite nanoparticles, and subsequently covered with a pristine chitosan top layer to form a sandwich architecture. The encapsulation of the nanoparticles within the intermediate layer enhances photocatalytic performance under solar irradiation while preventing nanoparticle leaching into the treated aqueous medium. The magnetic nature of the nickel ferrite nanoparticles enables easy recovery and reuse of the composite film using an external magnetic field. The tri-layer composite film displays a methylene blue degradation efficiency of approximately 93.6% under solar irradiation, representing an improvement of about 10% compared to a single-layer chitosan–nickel ferrite composite film. The invention provides a simple, reusable, environmentally friendly, and magnetically recoverable photocatalytic material for the efficient purification of methylene blue contaminated water while minimizing secondary pollution.
