Abstract: A top piston ring includes a ring-shaped body having first and second end portions separated by a ring gap. The first and second end portions each include a planar end face that spans between upper and lower sides of the ring-shaped body. The first end face is arranged at an inclination angle measured relative to the lower side and the second end face is arranged at the inclination angle measured relative to the upper side. The first end face includes a first lower portion and the second end face includes a second lower portion, wherein the first and second lower portions are configured to move a circumferential distance relative to each other such that the first and second end faces contact each other to close the ring gap during engine operation. During engine operation, the second lower portion moves to elevate above the first lower portion to form a gap. Fig. 1
