Abstract: ABSTRACT Disclosed herein is a terrain adaptable shape-shifting wheel system (100), the system (100) comprises a central hub assembly (102) configured to rotatably mount the wheel on a vehicle and to house a plurality of actuators. The system also includes a plurality of rim segments (104) arranged circumferentially around the central hub assembly and are interconnected via hinge joints, each rim segment being movable between a retracted position and an extended position. The system also includes a rack-and-pinion mechanism (106) configured to convert rotary motion of the actuator into linear displacement of the rim segment. The system also includes a control unit (108) configured to generate pulse width modulation (PWM) signals to control operation of the plurality of servo motors in a synchronized manner.
