Abstract: A terahertz metamaterial structure (100) for producing ultra-strongly coupled hybrid terahertz (THz) resonances is disclosed. The structure (100) comprises a substrate (102) having a planar surface, one or more metallic cut-wire resonators (104) disposed on the planar surface and configured to exhibit an electric-dipole (ED) mode upon excitation by an incident THz electromagnetic wave, and a respective pair of circular split-ring resonators (106A, 106B) disposed on laterally opposite sides of each metallic cut-wire resonator (104) and configured to exhibit a toroidal-dipole (TD) mode upon excitation by the incident THz electromagnetic wave. A near-field ultra-strong coupling (USC) exists between the ED mode and the TD mode and produces a plurality of hybrid resonances comprising a TD-dominant hybrid resonance and an ED-dominant hybrid resonance. A photoconductive modulation layer (108) may be disposed over the substrate (102), and undergoes a change in electrical conductivity in response to optical excitation. [Figure 1B]
