MUMBAI, India, July 31 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202411096331 A) filed by Mercedes-Benz Group AG on December 06, 2024, for A System To Control A Cover For A Vehicle-Mounted Camera.

Inventors include Vishnu Kumar; Suresh Kumar Babu; and Rajesh Karthikeyan.

The application for the patent was published on July 24, 2026, under issue no. 30/2026.

Abstract: A system (100) for controlling a cover (104) for a vehicle-mounted camera (102) includes a cover (104) that moves between an open position, exposing the camera (102), and a closed position, covering the camera (102) and a shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator (106) connected to the cover (104), with a heating element (108) that induces temperature-based shape transformation in the SMA actuator (106) to open the cover (104) when specific conditions are met. In addition, a controller (110) activates the heating element (108) upon detecting the specific conditions, moving the cover (104) to the open position. When the current is stopped, the SMA actuator (106) cools, returning the cover (104) to the closed position. The cover (104), the SMA actuator (106), and the heating element (108) are concealed behind an emblem of the vehicle, providing a compact, effective solution for camera protection.
