The apparatus (110) comprises a monitoring unit (410) and a controller (604). The monitoring unit (410) comprises a plurality of sensors. The controller (604) is electrically coupled with the monitoring unit (410). The controller (604) comprises a detecting10 unit (606) and a protecting unit (612). The detecting unit (606) detects an electrical surge in at least one of the electrical parameters if the value of at least one of the electrical parameters is greater than a predefined threshold. The protecting unit (612) selectively disconnects the electrical equipment from the power supply in response to a detected electrical surge.15
