A registration module (106) registers a contributing entity and a distributing organisation. An approval module (114) validates identification information of the distributing organisation and generates a unique identifier. A user interface (110) presents information relating to storage units (136), such as public refrigerators, to facilitate selection of a destination for food items. A monitoring and report generator module (116) monitors contributions and generates reports. A record management module (118) records each contribution on a distributed ledger (132), such as a blockchain network, in association with the unique identifier and the corresponding record stored in the data repository (108). A slot sensing unit (138) determines the occupancy of storage slots.
