Abstract: The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), instituted in 1982 and incorporated under the Sixth Schedule in 1984, represents a constitutional effort to address the historical marginalization of Indigenous communities following Tripura's merger with the Indian Union. However, the potential for genuine tribal empowerment through this institutional framework remains limited unless the deeper structural issues encapsulated in the 'tribal question' including land rights, cultural autonomy, and political agency are meaningfully addressed. It is important to acknowledge that, over time, Indigenous communities in Tripura have strategically secured certain degrees of autonomy in areas such as land rights, education, employment, and cultural expression. However, these, gains have largely been confined to selected groups within the Indigenous population those with relatively greater access and opportunity thereby reflecting and reinforcing existing intra-community social and economic inequalities. Therefore, this study helps in throwing a methodological and conceptual invention to understand the disparities existing within the tribal communities and to consider them as `heterogenous' and not merely a homogenous entity. This study examines intergenerational mobility in education and occupation among the Scheduled Tribes of one of the North-Eastern states of the country — Tripura. Recognizing the inherent limitations of the secondary data, particularly in capturing the complexities of intra and inter-tribal heterogeneity, the study narrows its focus to two prominent tribal communities Debbarmas (largest clan among the Tripuris) and Bru Reangs, recognized as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG). To explore the structural inequalities that persist between these communities and examine the intergenerational mobility of education and occupation, primary data were collected through field survey across four districts of Tripura. A mobility matrix (Table 1, Table 2) has been created to analyse the intergenerational mobility and a heterogeneity framework (Figure 2) is also created in order to understand the heterogenous disparity and inequality existing between and within both the communities.
