Abstract: The present invention discloses a side crash assist system (200) for a vehicle (100) comprises one or more multi-modal sensors (210), a door actuation mechanism (218), and an electronic control unit (ECU) (202). The one or more multi-modal sensors (210) detect approaching objects. The door actuation mechanism (218) moves the vehicle's door (106) between open and closed positions. the ECU (202) comprises at least one processor (204) coupled to at least one memory (206), the processor multi-modal sensors data from the one or more multi-modal sensors (210), processes the multi-modal sensors data to identify a possible collision event involving the vehicle and the one or more objects, and operates the door actuation mechanism (218) to move the door (106) to the closed position from the open position, upon detecting the possible collision event.
