MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611091724 A) filed by Graphic Era Deemed To Be University on July 29, 2026, for A System And Method For Monitoring Intravenous Drip Rate And Generating Flow Alerts.
Inventors include Aastha Mani; Simrah Ahsan; Niharika Dhama; Shreya Sharma; and Dr. Royal Madan.
The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.
Abstract: The invention relates to intravenous infusion monitoring, and discloses a system and method in which an IR sensor is positioned around or adjacent a drip chamber of an IV tube setup to detect individual falling drops by infrared interruption or intensity variation, convert each drop passage into an electrical signal, and supply the signal to an Arduino Uno. The Arduino Uno interprets valid outputs as drop events, performs time-based counting, calculates drip rate per minute, compares the calculated rate with predefined safe limits or a safe range, and actuates a buzzer and/or LED, with optional LCD display update. Compared with manual visual observation, the invention provides continuous electronic drip counting, faster recognition of over-infusion and under-infusion conditions, and improved alert reliability without automatic regulation or stoppage of flow. The invention is principally useful for bedside IV flow supervision in hospitals, clinics, and related healthcare settings.
