MUMBAI, India, Nov. 2 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611094347 A) filed by Indraprastha Institute Of Information Technology Delhi on August 04, 2026, for A System And Method For Enabling Touch-Free Input Interactions On A Surface-Placed Smartphone Using Ferromagnetic Objects.

Inventors include Dr. Abhijeet Mishra; Mr. Rahul Gupta; Dr. Aman Parnami; and Dr. Jainendra Shukla.

The application for the patent was published on October 30, 2026, under issue no. 44/2026.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a system and method for enabling touch-free interaction with a smartphone positioned on a surface. The invention utilizes naturally occurring ferromagnetic objects present in the surrounding environment and a built-in smartphone magnetometer (104) to detect proximity-induced magnetic field variations. A signal-processing module (110) identifies magnetic disturbances relative to a baseline magnetic field and classifies the disturbances into user commands including single tap, double tap, long tap, and continuous tap interactions. The system (100) operates without requiring touchscreen contact, specialized hardware, wearable devices, cameras, radar sensors, infrared sensors, dedicated magnets, or environmental instrumentation. The invention provides a low-cost, passive, and universally deployable interaction mechanism particularly suitable for contaminated-hand, gloved-hand, industrial, laboratory, culinary, healthcare, and maintenance environments.
