Abstract: A method for adaptive multi-channel electroencephalographic denoising is disclosed. The method comprises computing, by a signal characterization unit (201) and a signal profiling unit (203), statistical and spectral features of a multi-channel electroencephalographic signal; identifying, by an artifact identification unit (205), artifact-containing segments of the signal; applying, by a topographic screening unit (207), a topographic rule identifying ocular artifacts from a frontal electrode region and electromyographic artifacts from a temporal electrode region; combining, by a combining unit (209), the outputs to generate an artifact localization map; segmenting and spatially encoding, by a signal segmentation unit (301) and a spatial encoding unit (303), the signal, wherein a spatial bias is derived from three- dimensional coordinates of the electrodes (107) such that the method operates on electrode configurations having different channel counts without retraining; and reconstructing and outputting a denoised output signal having improved signal fidelity.
