Abstract: ABSTRACT A System and Method for Controlled Hepatic Vascular Occlusion During Liver Surgery The present invention pertains to a system and method of controlled hepatic vascular occlusion for use during liver surgery. The system involves the use of an endovascular catheter which can be inserted into the inferior vena cava, with the first balloon being located above renal veins and the second balloon being located above the hepatic veins. The second balloon is capable of being inflated using carbon dioxide to facilitate buoyancy-based placement in the veins. The system further comprises sensing modules to sense intravascular parameters, a control unit which can regulate the balloon inflation, and a safety device for the controlled release of the inflation medium to avoid problems like air embolism. An optional fluid delivery module for delivering anti-thrombogenic agents between the two balloons can also be included. Fig. 3
