Abstract: A SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR AUTONOMOUS ROVER NAVIGATION FOR PLANETARY AND HAZARDOUS TERRAIN EXPLORATION An autonomous rover system for planetary and hazardous terrain exploration comprises a chassis with a rocker–bogie suspension assembly (1) featuring rocker arms pivotally connected to a central suspension component (3), airless wheels (6) with helical, gear–inspired treads each driven by a planetary gear DC motor (7), and a steering system employing a steering servo motor (8) configured for center–pivot and Ackermann steering. A retractable sensor mast actuated by a stepper motor (9) and servo motor (10) mounts an RP LiDAR (13) and a depth camera (12) for terrain sensing, while a robotic arm (2) with a linear movement gripper (11) collects samples (14) into a sample collect box (4). The control module executes ROS2–based navigation algorithms with sensor fusion via an Extended Kalman Filter and operates in manual, semi–automatic, and fully autonomous modes.
