Abstract: The present disclosure relates to an adaptive multimodal documentation and conservation aware analysis of botanical specimens and a system and method therefor. The system includes a controlled imaging chamber, a specimen support assembly, a condition sensing array, a multispectral illumination assembly, a movable image acquisition assembly, a targeted microscopy unit, a surface geometry sensor, a microclimate controller, a cumulative exposure controller, and a processor. The processor generates a region specific condition profile based on sensed moisture, temperature, reflectance, fluorescence and deformation information and determines imaging parameters and conservation thresholds accordingly. The processor synchronizes the illumination wavelength, intensity, angle, exposure time, camera position, humidity, temperature and air flow during acquisition. Specimen changes and cumulative wavelength-specific radiant exposure are monitored in real time. Once a conservation threshold is reached, the system alters or suspends the imaging operation in question. Macroscopic, microscopic, spectral and geometrical observations are acquired and spatially registered to produce a traceable botanical research record while reducing illumination-induced, thermal, environmental and mechanical deterioration of specimens.
