Abstract: ABSTRACT A SYSTEM, A METHOD AND A PORTABLE HANDHELD DEVICE FOR FABRIC DEFECT DETECTION ASSISTING VISUALLY IMPAIRED USERS The present invention is related to an apparatus and process for portable handheld inspection of fabrics with defects in assistance of visually impaired persons. This system consists of a handheld device which includes an imaging system, illumination means, processing unit, and feedback means. The imaging system obtains live images of the fabric surface with structured illumination, whereas the processing unit carries out image preprocessing, extraction, and classification by application of image processing and artificial intelligence/machine learning algorithms. Defects like holes, stains, tears, and weaving inconsistencies are detected in the system, which outputs live non-visual feedback wirelessly by audio and/or haptic methods. In some embodiments, spatial guidance is also provided by the system for location of defects. Fig. 3
