MUMBAI, India, Sept. 22 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202611089497 A) filed by Chitkara University on July 22, 2026, for A Sustained-Release Probiotic Lozenge With Encapsulated Prebiotic And Ph-Buffering Components.

Inventors include Dr. Sonia Dhiman; Dr. Shareen Singh; and Dr. Thakur Gurjeet Singh.

The application for the patent was published on September 18, 2026, under issue no. 38/2026.

Abstract: The present invention a sustained-release probiotic lozenge (100) comprises a multilayer lozenge body (1000) having an outer saliva-wetting coat (1100), a pH- responsive interfacial barrier layer (1300), and an inner sustained-release core (1200). The inner sustained-release core (1200) contains dual-shell probiotic microcapsules (200), an encapsulated prebiotic substrate (300), a xylitol-containing prebiotic matrix (400), and pH-buffering components (500) arranged in spatially separated buffer microdomains (1400). Each probiotic microcapsule (200) includes a lyoprotective matrix (220) and a moisture-resistant lipid-polymer shell (230). A water-activity-control matrix (1500) protects probiotic viability, while radial saliva-infiltration channels (1600) regulate hydration and erosion. The calcium/phosphate buffer (600) maintains a near-neutral intraoral microenvironment during a dissolution period of 10–20 minutes. An optional biofilm-disrupting payload (700) comprising dextranase or mutanase (800) is physically separated from the probiotic microcapsules (200) until saliva activation. The coordinated architecture provides reproducible release, improved storage stability, sustained viable-cell recovery, and reduced acidification without constituting a therapeutic-treatment method in use.
