Abstract: A sustained release ocular drug insert is disclosed for placement in the conjunctival sac. The insert comprises a drug reservoir core containing an ophthalmically active agent, a release controlling membrane, a hydrated ocular contact layer, a peripheral retention edge, and a handling tab region. The membrane regulates diffusion of the agent into tear fluid, while the contact layer improves comfort during blinking. The insert maintains dimensional stability after hydration and provides prolonged local drug availability with reduced need for repeated eye drop administration.
