Abstract: ABSTRACT A SUPERCAVITATING PROJECTILE ASSEMBLY WITH ENHANCED UNDERWATER RANGE AND METHOD OF LAUNCHING THEREOF A supercavitating projectile assembly (10) is disclosed, comprising an elongated projectile body (12) having a cavitator (14) at its forward end, the cavitator being dimensioned relative to the body, in a length-to-diameter ratio of about 30:1 to 40:1, to initiate and sustain a vapour cavity (20) substantially enveloping the body (12) when launched through a liquid medium (22) at a velocity exceeding about 100 m/s. A protective coating (16), such as a cadmium coating of about 0.6 micron thickness, is applied to the outer surface of the body. Alternative cavitator geometries, including a sharp/stepped form (14a) and a blunt reverse-frustum “connecting section” form (14b), permit tuning of the cavity diameter and length for a given operating depth. A launch assembly comprising a gun barrel (30) and propellant cartridge (32) imparts the requisite launch velocity. The resulting supercavity reduces hydrodynamic drag from an order of kilonewtons to an order of tens to hundreds of newtons, thereby substantially extending the achievable underwater range of the projectile for a given, limited launch energy, as validated by analytical, numerical and experimental investigation.
