Abstract: A sun visor assembly (100) for a vehicle includes a sun visor (102) that moves between a stowed position, resting against the headliner (104), and a deployed position, opposite a side window to block glare, and a hinge mechanism (108) coupling the sun visor (102) to the headliner (104) and allowing movement between the two positions. The hinge mechanism (108) is linked to the vehicle’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and receives a signal indicating an imminent crash. Upon receiving this signal, the hinge mechanism (108) moves the sun visor (102), in a vertical plane and linearly along a lateral axis, to move the sun visor away fully out of a path of a curtain airbag, to prevent the sun visor (102) from striking the occupant under the force of the deploying airbag, thereby enhancing safety during a crash.
