Abstract: The present invention relates to a physiology-aware adaptive power management system and method for energy-efficient pulse oximetry. Conventional pulse oximeters operate using continuous sensing and fixed sampling, causing unnecessary power consumption, particularly in wearable and portable devices. The invention establishes a subject-specific baseline from beat-to-beat cardiac interval statistics, and evaluates beat interval regularity, waveform morphology, and cumulative drift to determine physiological stability. A confidence-based supervisory controller modulates the sensor's sleep and wake duty-cycle, suppressing redundant sensing during stable conditions and reactivating full sensing upon detecting instability, signal degradation, or clinically relevant deviation. Suppression windows are synchronised to the cardiac cycle on a beat-by-beat basis rather than fixed time intervals. By selectively reducing LED emission, signal acquisition, and processing workload within physiologically safe bounds, the invention lowers power consumption without compromising measurement reliability, supporting extended operation in long-duration monitoring including intensive care, home healthcare, and resource-constrained environments.
