The application for the patent was published on September 25, 2026, under issue no. 39/2026.
Abstract: ABSTRACT [0018] A portable object detection system is described that helps visually impaired people recognize objects around them and learn how far away those objects are. Live images captured by a stereo camera are processed by a YOLOv8 model trained on a custom collection of four thousand images covering twelve everyday and hazardous classes. Stereo disparity is converted into distance values for each detected object. The resulting information is turned into short spoken sentences such as the name of the object and its approximate distance and is delivered through headphones or a speaker. The complete pipeline runs on modest hardware such as a Raspberry Pi, delivering timely auditory alerts that improve spatial awareness and independent mobility. Laboratory and real-world trials confirm reliable detection of items including staircases, switch boards, people and common obstacles under ordinary indoor and outdoor lighting.
