Abstract: ABSTRACT A SMART BATTERY SAFETY SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES Disclosed is a battery safety system 100 and method for electric vehicles and energy storage systems The system comprises battery enclosure, sensor array 142, controller, emergency response arrangement and fire suppression arrangement 132. The sensors detect fire, smoke, gas, temperature, vibration and impact conditions. Upon detection of a predetermined abnormal condition, the controller 126 activates an alert and the fire suppression arrangement 132. In an embodiment, distributed temperature sensing, electrochemical impedance sensing, gas sensing and acoustic sensing are processed by embedded machine-learning engine to generate a thermal runaway probability score. A thermomechanical shape- memory-alloy (SMA) electrical isolation mechanism provides electrical isolation and a zone-targeted clean-agent arrangement provides fire suppression. A composite layer 140 as enclosure including phase-change material and aerogel provides thermal containment enclosure 134. Vehicle communication, data logging and remote monitoring additionally be provided. FIG. 8
