Abstract: The enhancement of communication skills in language learners is significantly supported by context-based learning environments, which facilitate the contextualized application of language, adaptation to diverse situations, and improvements in both language proficiency and communicative competence. Although the characteristics of situated learning have been extensively explored across various fields and platforms, research on its implementation within virtual reality (VR) for language learning remains limited. To address this gap, this convergent mixed-methods study, grounded in a situated learning framework, investigated the impact of this approach on the English-speaking performance of sixteen first-year English majors at an Indian university. Using the desktop VR application Immerse, students participated in eight role-play speaking classes. Data were collected through pre- and post-assessments of fluency, vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar, as well as semi-structured interviews with six participants. Quantitative analysis employing paired-samples t-tests revealed a significant improvement in learners' overall speaking performance (t(15) = 7.41, p .001, Cohen’s d = 1.82) and in each individual assessed area. Thematically analyzed qualitative data indicated that the authenticity of the context and tasks, collaborative learning, expert guidance, and opportunities for reflection were key factors contributing to a rich learning experience aligned with the principles of situated learning.
