Abstract: The invention relates to surface-protective sol-gel coatings for galvanized iron and discloses a silica-modified alumina sol-gel coating composition, a preparation and coating process, and a coated galvanized iron article. An alumina sol is prepared from aluminium nitrate nonahydrate, Al(NO3)3ยท9H2O, in ethanol under alkaline conditions using a 1:1 mixture of NH4OH and distilled water, followed by modification with equal amounts of tetraethoxysilane and methyltriethoxysilane to form a modified alumina-silica sol. Upon application and drying on galvanized iron, the sol develops a hybrid alumina-silica network containing Al-O-Al, Si-O-Si and Al-O-Si linkages. Compared with conventional protective treatments, the disclosed composition provides a stable colloidal system and a strongly adherent coating on galvanized iron, suitable for metallic panels, sheets, fasteners, pipelines, storage containers, roofing, support structures, fabricated steel assemblies and protective metallic hardware.
