MUMBAI, India, Sept. 14 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202641103828 A) filed by Chennai Institute Of Technology on August 28, 2026, for A Silane Functionalized Biochar And Natural Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composite.

Inventors include N. Vijayasharathi; Dr. D. Jayabaiakrishnan; and Dr. M. D. Vijayakumar.

The application for the patent was published on September 11, 2026, under issue no. 37/2026.

Abstract: A polymer matrix composite comprises a polymer resin matrix (1) reinforced with surface-treated reinforcing natural fiber (2) and porous biochar filler (3). The porous biochar filler (3) is synthesized by pyrolyzing fruit peel in a pyrolysis furnace (6) at 10 600°C under an inert atmosphere. Both the reinforcing natural fiber (2) and porous biochar filler (3) are functionalized with a silane coupling agent (4) inside a chemical stirring reactor (7) to enhance interfacial matrix bonding. The composite is formed on a fabrication mold base (10) using vacuum consolidation assembly (11) and cured in a thermal post-curing chamber (12) at 120°C. The resulting composite achieves a 15 tensile strength of 137 MPa, flexural strength of 181 MPa, and a UL-94 V-0 rating. The structure exhibits high thermal conductivity and low wear rate after aging in an elevated service conditioning chamber (13). The composite is applicable in structural, marine, automotive, aerospace, and construction sectors.
