Abstract: ABSTRACT A SIDE SCAN SONAR SYSTEM AND METHODOLOGY FOR ADAPTIVE SWATH CONTROL This invention pertains to a side scan SONAR (SSS) system which has an active wing mechanism to adaptively adjust the swath area covered during survey. The invention integrates an active wing control mechanism based on altitude data, depth data, AHRS data, acoustic transducer frequency, and acoustic transducer beamwidth to sets the swath area coverage. This invention operates system in far field range by adjusting depression angle of the system. Nadir area reduction to zero is achieved in this system without the use of forward-looking sonar, gap filler sonar or echosounders or similar devices. System incorporates a mechanism to control maximum range achievable based on the altitude & critical angle of operation. System implements multiple modes of operation like Auto-orient, Max range, Zero nadir, Normal and Auto-fold.
