Abstract: A shape-morphing robotic locomotion system (101) is disclosed for real-time adaptive interaction with variable terrain. The system comprises a multi-leg body structure (102) having articulated robotic legs, each integrating a piezoelectric variable stiffness actuator (103) configured to reversibly modify leg stiffness. Ground interaction forces are sensed using tactile force sensing elements (104), while inertial sensing elements (105) detect vibration and dynamic response. A high-speed analog-to-digital conversion module (106) digitizes the sensed signals and supplies them to an edge-based stiffness control unit (107). The control unit executes hardware- implemented adaptive stiffness inference logic (108) to determine an optimal stiffness command. A digital-to-analog conversion and drive module (109) generates an actuator excitation signal applied through a closed-loop control path (110). The system produces a measurable physical change in mechanical stiffness within a low-latency response interval, thereby improving locomotion stability, reducing energy loss, and enhancing operational efficiency across diverse ground conditions.
