Abstract: The present disclosure is related to a waste container (100) and a method (600) for waste decontamination in the waste container (100). The waste container (100) includes a body (101) defining a storage chamber (102) and an inlet (106). A diaphragm mechanism (108) at the inlet (106) with overlapping blades arranged circumferentially. A UV module (112) with UV-C light emitters oriented towards the storage chamber (102). At least one fill-level sensor (506) configured to detect fill level within the storage chamber (102), and a control unit (502) connected to the UV module (112), fill-level sensor (506), and diaphragm mechanism (108). The control unit (502) is configured to receive fill level input, adjust the diaphragm mechanism (108) to alter aperture size, and initiate a decontamination cycle by operating the UV module (112).
