MUMBAI, India, July 24 -- Intellectual Property India has published a patent application (202441100900 A) filed by Manipal Academy Of Higher Education on June 19, 2025, for A Self-Absorbable Biodegradable Biliary Stent And A Method For Fabricating Thereof.

Abstract: The invention offers a self-absorbable biodegradable biliary stent coated with nanoparticles and a method of fabrication to address challenges associated with pancreatico-biliary disorders, including infections, excessive tissue growth, and complications associated with stents. The method includes designing the stent with biocompatible, biodegradable materials, formulating nanoparticles configured for sustained release of antiproliferative and antibacterial agents, and utilizing dip-coating or spray-coating methods for the application of the coating. The stent degrades in situ over a defined period, eliminating the need for repeated interventions while preserving patency and tensile strength. This approach ensures extended stent performance by inhibiting biofilm formation, decreasing restenosis, and aiding natural recovery. The invention offers an efficient, minimally invasive approach for managing biliary obstructions, improving treatment outcomes, and enhancing quality of life, particularly in cases where sustained functionality and fewer procedural complications are vital.
